How to use Netflix on your Roku

Use this article to learn about Netflix features and how to set up and sign out of your account. If you’re unsure if your device supports Netflix, follow the steps in the “Set up Netflix” section to attempt to locate the Netflix app.

Netflix is available on select Roku models. Netflix streaming features on supported devices include:

Navigation
On most devices, you can browse through rows of TV shows and movies, including a row dedicated to your My List selections. Each row represents a category such as comedies, dramas, or TV shows that we show you based on what you’ve watched.

Resolution
Most devices can stream Netflix in high definition on fast internet connections and will play Netflix in their maximum supported resolution.

Parental controls
You can set parental controls on individual profiles.

Subtitles & alternate audio
Learn how to turn on subtitles, closed captions, and alternate audio (including 5.1 surround sound), which are available on many TV shows and movies. Many devices let you choose the appearance of subtitles and captions. Some devices display subtitles and captions in their default appearance, or aren't set up to display subtitles.

*For Roku 3 and earlier you may need to manually set your display type to 1080p to stream in this resolution.

Before you can watch Netflix movies and TV shows on your Roku, you must create a Roku account on the Roku website. Once the account is created, follow the steps for your Roku below.

Roku 1

  1. From the main Home screen, navigate to Home and select Netflix.

    • If Netflix is missing:

      • Navigate to Channel Store, then Movies & TV.

      • Select Netflix, then Add Channel, then go to channel.

  2. Select Yes on the Are you a member of Netflix? screen.

  3. A code will appear. Enter this activation code at netflix.com/activate.

Your Roku is now connected to your Netflix account. Enjoy!

All other Roku models

  1. From the main Home screen, navigate to Home and select Netflix.

    • If Netflix is missing:

      • Navigate to Streaming Channels, then Movies & TV.

      • Select Netflix, then Add Channel, then go to channel.

  2. Select Sign In on the Netflix home screen.

Your Roku is now connected to your Netflix account. Enjoy!

To sign out of the Netflix account on your device, follow these steps.

Roku 1

  1. Press the Home button to navigate to the Roku Home Menu.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select Netflix Settings.

  4. Select Deactivate this player from my Netflix account.

  5. Select Yes. The device is now deactivated.

If you need to reactivate your Roku player, select Netflix from the home screen, then follow the on-screen prompts to reactivate.

Roku 2 (LT, XS or XD)

  1. Press the Home button to navigate to the Roku Home Menu.

  2. Highlight the Netflix app and press the star key on your remote.

  3. Select Remove channel.

  4. Once you confirm by selecting Remove channel again, the device will be deactivated.

    • Deactivating the Roku 2 in this manner will remove the Netflix channel from the main menu. To restore it, select Streaming Channels > Movies & TV > Netflix.

Roku 3 and Roku 4

  1. Go to the Netflix home screen, then go left to open the menu.

  2. Go to the bottom of the menu, then go right and select Get Help.

    Note:
    If you don't see Get Help, go up and select Settings settings icon.
  3. Select Sign out > Yes.

If you can't find Get Help, Settings, or Sign out:

  1. Using your remote, press these buttons in this order: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up.

  2. On the menu that appears, select Sign out, Start Over, Reset, or Deactivate.

Roku Streaming Stick

  1. Go to the Netflix home screen, then go left to open the menu.

  2. Go to the bottom of the menu, then go right and select Get Help.

    Note:
    If you don't see Get Help, go up and select Settings settings icon.
  3. Select Sign out > Yes.

If you can't find Get Help, Settings, or Sign out:

  1. Using your remote, press these buttons in this order: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up.

  2. On the menu that appears, select Sign out, Start Over, Reset, or Deactivate.

Roku TV

  1. Go to the Netflix home screen, then go left to open the menu.

  2. Go to the bottom of the menu, then go right and select Get Help.

    Note:
    If you don't see Get Help, go up and select Settings settings icon.
  3. Select Sign out > Yes.

If you can't find Get Help, Settings, or Sign out:

  1. Using your remote, press these buttons in this order: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up.

  2. On the menu that appears, select Sign out, Start Over, Reset, or Deactivate.

Roku Express, Premiere, and Ultra

  1. Go to the Netflix home screen, then go left to open the menu.

  2. Go to the bottom of the menu, then go right and select Get Help.

    Note:
    If you don't see Get Help, go up and select Settings settings icon.
  3. Select Sign out > Yes.

If you can't find Get Help, Settings, or Sign out:

  1. Using your remote, press these buttons in this order: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up.

  2. On the menu that appears, select Sign out, Start Over, Reset, or Deactivate.

Netflix is available in Ultra HD on select Roku streaming media players. To stream in Ultra HD, you will need:

  • A 2014 or newer Ultra HD TV that is capable of streaming Ultra HD content at 60 Hz, connected to your Roku via an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later (usually the HDMI 1 port).

  • A Netflix plan that supports streaming in Ultra HD.

  • A steady internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher.

  • Streaming quality set to Auto or High.

The following Roku models currently support Netflix in Ultra HD:

  • Roku 4

  • Roku Premiere

  • Roku Premiere+

  • Roku Ultra

If you experience any issues playing content in Ultra HD, follow the steps below to ensure your Roku is configured for Ultra HD output.

  1. From the Roku home menu, select Settings.

  2. Select Display.

  3. Select 4k UHD TV.

  4. Try Netflix again.

Netflix is available in HDR on the Roku Premiere+ and Roku Ultra. To stream in HDR, you will need:

  • A Netflix plan that supports streaming in Ultra HD.

  • A streaming device that supports either Dolby Vision or HDR and Netflix.

  • A smart TV that supports either Dolby Vision or HDR10 connected to your device via an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later (usually the HDMI 1 port).

  • A steady internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher.

  • Streaming quality set to High.
