How to use Netflix on your Mac computer

Use this article to learn about Netflix features on your Mac computer and how to set up and sign out of your account.

Netflix is available on Mac computers using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or the Safari browser. Netflix streaming features on Mac computers include:

Navigation
Browse rows of movie posters: The main Netflix.com page displays rows of TV shows and movies for you to browse. You can also browse genres from the Browse menu.

Search: Search for specific TV show or movie titles, actors, directors, or genres from the search box in the upper right corner of the Netflix.com menu bar.

Find TV shows and movies by searching directly on Netflix.com when using your Mac computer.

TV Show or Movie Pages: Hover over a specific TV show or movie poster to see additional information, such as a brief synopsis, year produced, or maturity rating. Clicking on the title from within this section will take you to the full description for that TV show or movie.

Playback: Click on a poster to begin playing a TV show or movie. While your title is playing, use the scroll bar at the bottom of the player screen to fast forward, rewind, or see more options. To exit video playback, select the back button in the upper left corner of your screen. If the scroll bar or back button are not visible on your screen, move your cursor until they appear.

Supported regions
Netflix supports streaming on Mac computers using supported browsers in all regions where Netflix is available.

Resolution
Mac computers support streaming in the following browser resolutions:

  • Google Chrome up to 720p

  • Mozilla Firefox up to 720p

  • Opera up to 720p

  • Safari up to 1080p on macOS 10.10 to 10.15

  • Safari up to 4K on macOS 11.0 or later

Note:
4K Ultra HD support for macOS 11.0 Big Sur is currently in development may not be available at all times.

Subtitles & alternate audio
Select the Audio and Subtitles icon to choose an alternate language track or turn on available subtitles.

You can watch Netflix on your Mac computer by visiting Netflix.com. To sign in to your Netflix account using your browser, follow the steps below.

Mac computers with Intel processors

Watching on Netflix.com is supported on Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari browsers.

  1. From your browser, visit netflix.com.

  2. Select Sign In.

  3. Enter your Netflix email and password.

Select 2020 Mac computers with Apple M1 processors

Watching on Netflix.com is supported on Chrome* and Safari browsers.

  1. From your browser, visit netflix.com.

  2. Select Sign In.

  3. Enter your Netflix email and password.

Note:
Mac computers with Apple M1 processors will be prompted to install additional software when using Chrome. For help, visit Google Support.

To sign out of the Netflix account on your Mac computer, follow the steps below.

  1. From your preferred browser, visit netflix.com.

  2. From the Netflix home screen, hover over your profile name in the upper right corner of the page.

  3. Select Sign out of Netflix.

You are now signed out of your Netflix account.

Note:
These steps will only sign you out of Netflix on your current browser. If you are signed in to your Netflix account on more than one browser, you will need to repeat the steps on all browsers that you use to access Netflix.

To stream in Ultra HD, you will need:

  • A Mac computer with macOS 11.0 Big Sur installed.

  • The latest version of Safari browser

  • Select 2018 or later Mac computer with an Apple T2 Security chip

  • A 60Hz 4K capable display (with HDCP 2.2 connection if external display).

    Note:
    Every monitor connected to your computer must meet these requirements to successfully stream in Ultra HD.
  • A plan that supports streaming in Ultra HD. A steady internet connection speed of 25 megabits per second or higher.

  • Streaming quality set to Auto or High.

Note:
4K Ultra HD support for macOS 11.0 Big Sur is currently in development may not be available at all times.

Netflix is available in HDR on Mac computers using the Safari browser.

To stream HDR content on your Mac computer, your system must meet or exceed the following requirements:

  • macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later

  • A compatible Mac model with an HDR-capable display

  • If using a cable or adapter, it must support HDR

  • The High Dynamic Range checkbox is selected in System Preferences > Display
