Subtitles won't turn off.

If you are watching a TV show or movie that was produced in another region, you may not have the ability to turn off subtitles. Due to content licensing, select titles may display subtitles in your region's primary language by default.

Subtitle preferences are not saved when watching Kids titles. If you find that you have to turn off your subtitles every time you try to watch, play a title with a maturity rating of Teens or above set to your preferred subtitle language. This will save your settings for future viewing.

If you see the option to turn off subtitles but are unable to disable them, follow the troubleshooting steps for your device below.

Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3

  1. Launch the Netflix app.

  2. Select a TV show or movie.

  3. While your TV show or movie is playing, hold down the center button on your Apple TV remote.

  4. Select your preferred audio or subtitle options.

  5. Allow the TV show or movie to play for at least half of its duration. This will save your setting for future viewing.

Nintendo 3DS

Play another TV show or movie

Try to play another TV show or movie. If another title plays without issue, go to the Viewing Activity page and select the Report a Problem link next to the title that did not work.

  • If you do not see the Report a Problem link, the problem has automatically been reported.

Try a different device

If subtitles do not display on any TV show or movie, you may need to use another device to watch Netflix with subtitles.

Samsung Smart TV

If changing your subtitle options to None on your 2011 or 2012 Samsung Smart TV does not turn off subtitles, we recommend using another device to stream Netflix. Because this issue only occurs on older versions of the Netflix app, you will only be able to adjust your subtitle settings by using an alternate device.

Xbox 360

If you've turned off subtitles in the Netflix app but are still seeing them, it's likely that subtitles are adjusted on your Xbox 360 itself. To disable them:

  1. Select Settings.

  2. Select System.

  3. Select Console Settings.

  4. Select Display.

  5. Select Closed Captioning.

  6. Select Off.

  7. Save your settings and exit, then try watching your TV show or movie again.

Xbox One

If you've turned off subtitles in the Netflix app but are still seeing them, it's likely that subtitles are still adjusted on your Xbox One. To disable them:

  1. Select Settings.

  2. Select Ease of access.

  3. Select Closed Captioning.

  4. Select Closed Captioning Off.

  5. Save your settings and exit, then try watching your TV show or movie again.
