How do I customize the appearance of subtitles and captions?

To customize the appearance of subtitles and captions, follow the steps for your device.

Note:
Subtitle and caption customization is not available in all languages.

Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3

Note:
Adjusting subtitles and closed caption appearance on Apple TVs will require that you have Software Version 5.0 or later installed on the device.

To adjust the subtitle and caption appearance on your Apple TV:

  1. From the device home screen, select Settings.

  2. Select General.

  3. Select Accessibility.

  4. Enable Closed Captions + SDH.

  5. Select Style and choose your preferred subtitle and caption appearance.

Apple TV 4 or Apple TV 4K

Note:
Adjusting subtitles and closed caption appearance on Apple TVs will require that you have tvOS 9.0 or later installed on the device.

To adjust the subtitle and caption appearance on your Apple TV:

  1. From the device home screen, select Settings.

  2. Select General.

  3. Select Accessibility.

  4. Select Subtitles and Captioning.

  5. Enable Closed Captions + SDH.

  6. From this screen, you'll be able to customize the appearance of subtitles and closed captions under Style.

    • If you choose to create a new style, ensure that Video Override is turned off within the Font, Size, Color, and Opacity options.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

iOS 12 and lower

To adjust the subtitle and caption appearance on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. From the device home screen, select Settings.

  2. Select General.

  3. Select Accessibility.

  4. Select Subtitles & Captioning.

  5. Use the slider to enable Closed Captions + SDH.

  6. From this screen, you'll be able to customize the appearance of subtitles and closed captions under Style.

    • If you choose to create a new style, ensure that Video Override is turned off within the Font, Size, Color, and Opacity options.

iOS 13+ or iPadOS 13+

To adjust the subtitle and caption appearance on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. From the device home screen, select Settings.

  2. Select Accessibility.

  3. Select Subtitles & Captioning.

  4. Use the slider to enable Closed Captions + SDH.

  5. From this screen, you'll be able to customize the appearance of subtitles and closed captions under Style.

    • If you choose to create a new style, ensure that Video Override is turned off within the Font, Size, Color, and Opacity options.

All other devices

Note:
Some older devices do not support subtitle and caption customization.

To adjust the subtitle and caption appearance on your device:

  1. From a web browser, go to your Account page.

  2. Select a profile name from Profile & Parental Controls.

  3. Select Change for Subtitle appearance.

  4. Set your subtitle appearance settings.

  5. Save changes.

  6. Launch the Netflix app on your device and enjoy your new subtitle and caption appearance.

    Note:
    If you're using a TV, open the Netflix app on your TV and select Settings, then Get Help, then Reload for the changes to take effect.
