How to change subtitle and caption appearance

You can change the font, size, shadow, and background color of subtitles and captions.

To change subtitle and caption appearance:

  1. From a web browser, go to your Netflix Account page.

  2. Select a profile name from Profile & Parental Controls.

  3. Select Change for Subtitle appearance.

    Note:
    The Subtitle appearance option is not available and does not display in some countries with the following primary languages: Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, Korean, Romanian, and Thai. Appearance options may not display on some older devices as well.
  4. Set your subtitle appearance settings.

  5. Save changes.

  6. Launch the Netflix app on your device.

    Note:
    If you're using a TV, open the Netflix app on your TV and select Settings, then Get Help, then Reload for the changes to take effect.

To change subtitle and caption appearance on Apple devices:

Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3

Note:
Adjusting subtitles and closed caption appearance on Apple TVs will require that you have Software Version 5.0 or later installed on the device.

To adjust the subtitle and caption appearance on your Apple TV:

  1. From the device home screen, select Settings.

  2. Select General.

  3. Select Accessibility.

  4. Enable Closed Captions + SDH.

  5. Select Style and choose your preferred subtitle and caption appearance.

Apple TV 4 or Apple TV 4K

Note:
Adjusting subtitles and closed caption appearance on Apple TVs will require that you have tvOS 9.0 or later installed on the device.

To adjust the subtitle and caption appearance on your Apple TV:

  1. From the device home screen, select Settings.

  2. Select General.

  3. Select Accessibility.

  4. Select Subtitles and Captioning.

  5. Enable Closed Captions + SDH.

  6. From this screen, you'll be able to customize the appearance of subtitles and closed captions under Style.

    • If you create a new style, make sure that Video Override is turned off within the Font, Size, Color, and Opacity options.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

To adjust the subtitle and caption appearance on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. From the device home screen, select Settings.

  2. Select Accessibility.

    Note:
    On iOS 12 and lower, you must first select General and then Accessibility.
  3. Select Subtitles & Captioning.

  4. Use the slider to enable Closed Captions + SDH.

  5. From this screen, you'll be able to customize the appearance of subtitles and closed captions under Style.

    • If you create a new style, make sure that Video Override is turned off within the Font, Size, Color, and Opacity options.
