How to change the appearance of subtitles and closed captions

You can change the font, size, shadow, and background color of subtitles and closed captions.

From a web browser

  1. Go to your Netflix Account page.

  2. From the Profile & Parental Controls section, select a profile.

  3. Select Change for Subtitle appearance.

    Note:
    The subtitle appearance option isn't available in some countries with the following primary languages, even if a profile is set to a different language: Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, Thai, and Traditional Chinese. Selected appearance options also might not show on some older devices.
  4. Choose your subtitle appearance settings.

  5. Select Save.

  6. Open the Netflix app on your device to start watching with your new subtitle appearance.

    Note:
    If you're using a TV, open the Netflix app on your TV and select Settings, then Get Help, then Reload for the changes to take effect.

From a TV or streaming device

  1. Begin playing a TV show or movie.

  2. From the player controls at the bottom of the screen, select Settings  to adjust subtitle Size and Style.

    Note:
    Subtitle settings aren't available for Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, Thai, and Traditional Chinese.
  3. Choose your Size and Style preferences.

  4. Resume playing the title.

Note:
Connected TV devices don't offer all of the subtitle appearance options available from a web browser.

From an Android phone or tablet

  1. From the Netflix app home screen, tap the profile icon  or Menu .

  2. Tap Manage Profiles.

  3. Select the profile you want to edit.

  4. Tap Subtitle Appearance.

  5. Choose your subtitle appearance settings. The new settings will automatically save.

  6. To reset, tap Restore Default Settings.

Note:
Changes made using the Netflix app will only apply to titles played on your Android mobile device.
