Managing Smart Downloads

Smart Downloads is a feature that helps you manage your downloaded TV shows. When you finish watching a downloaded episode, Smart Downloads will delete it, then automatically download the next episode in the series. If you would rather keep watched episodes on your device, you will need to turn off Smart Downloads so you can manually manage your downloaded content.

The Smart Downloads feature only turns on when you're connected to Wi-Fi, so your data plan will never be used, and it won't impact your device storage, because it will always delete the last watched episode before downloading the next one. Smart Downloads is available on devices supporting downloads installed with the latest version of the Netflix app for Android mobile devices, iOS mobile devices, Amazon Fire tablets, and computers and tablets running Windows 10.

How do Smart Downloads work?

If you’ve downloaded one or more episodes in a series, Smart Downloads will delete the episode you've just finished and automatically download the next episode in the series.

Example:

  1. You download Season 1, Episodes 1-3.

  2. You finish watching Season 1, Episode 1.

  3. Smart Downloads deletes Season 1, Episode 1, and automatically downloads Season 1, Episode 4.

Note:
If there are no additional episodes to download in your series, the last watched episode will not be deleted.

  1. Confirm Smart Downloads is turned on. (If you are unsure how to do this, follow the steps under "How do I turn Smart Downloads on or off?" above.)

  2. Confirm your device is connected to Wi-Fi. Smart Downloads only occur when Wi-Fi is active.

  3. Confirm there's another episode in the series. If Netflix doesn't list any later episodes in your series, there are no more episodes to download!
