Netflix says 'Sorry, we could not reach the Netflix service. (12002)'

If you see an error on your Android phone or tablet that says

Sorry, we could not reach the Netflix service. Please try again later. If the problem persists, please visit the Netflix website (12002).

It typically points an out of date version of Android on your device. Follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve the issue.

Check your Android version

Your current plan only supports playback on Android version 7 or later.

To check your Android version:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Select About phone or About tablet.

  3. Look for the number under Android version.

Note:
These steps may vary by version or manufacturer. If you are unable to locate your Android version, contact your device's manufacturer for assistance.
  • If your Android version is 4.4.4 or earlier, you will need to update to a later version of Android in order to watch on this device using your current plan. You can change your plan anytime from the Plan Details section of your Account page.

  • If your Android version is 7 or later, continue troubleshooting below.
