How to reduce the carbon emissions of your viewing experience

Netflix is committed to reducing our own carbon footprint, including on the sets of our productions for TV shows and films that our members love.

And while watching Netflix at home is not a big source of carbon emissions compared to other daily activities, the emissions it does generate come primarily from the electronic devices in your home. Netflix already strives to make streaming as efficient as possible, but here are some tips you can take at home to reduce carbon emissions during your viewing experience:

  • Set your TV to Eco-mode. This can help your TV automatically save energy.

  • Dim the lights. Screens tend to use more energy when you’re watching in a brightly-lit room. By lowering household lights, you can help save energy used by your lights and TV.

  • Pick the best screen size. Your TV screen accounts for most of your home viewing energy use. You can help optimize your viewing experience and save energy by choosing a TV that is energy efficient and fits the size of your room.

  • Use refurbished and recycled devices. Many retailers offer new-quality devices made from gently used and recycled parts, which can help reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing electronics.

  • Use Wi-Fi. When available, at home or in public spaces, Wi-Fi tends to be better than mobile networks because it generally doesn’t use additional energy for streaming.

  • Use "Auto Mode” on mobile. Keep your mobile device set to “Auto Mode” to optimize for streaming quality, data usage, and Internet Connection speeds.
