How to Cast or Mirror Netflix from Your Mobile Device

If you don’t have the Netflix app on your TV or on a device that connects to your TV, you may still be able to use your mobile device to cast, mirror, or connect to your TV using a video cable.

Casting

Use the Netflix mobile app to browse, play, or stop shows on your TV. This only works on cast-compatible TVs and displays. (See cast-compatible device list below.)

To cast from your mobile phone or tablet to a cast-compatible TV or device:

  1. On your mobile device, open the Netflix app and sign in if asked.

  2. Tap on a profile.

  3. In the upper-right corner, tap the Cast icon.

  4. Tap the device you want to cast to.

  5. Tap on the show or movie you want to watch.

(You can fast forward, rewind, pause, or change the audio or subtitle settings from your mobile device.)

Compatible devices

  • Chromecast (3rd gen or older; did not come with a physical remote)

  • Google Nest Hub Smart Displays

  • Select cast-enabled Vizio TVs

  • Select cast-enabled Compal TVs

If your device isn’t listed, you can still use the remote that came with your TV or device to open Netflix.

Using AirPlay with iPhone and iPad is not supported with Netflix.

Wireless screen mirroring

Display your entire mobile screen on your TV using a built-in feature or app. Note that Netflix may not support certain devices or mirroring apps.

Contact your device or app manufacturer to see which features are available or to get help troubleshooting.

Android phone or tablet

On Android, screen mirroring features can usually be found in your device's Settings app, but the exact name and steps depend on your device. (On Samsung phones and tablets, for example, you might use Samsung DeX or Smart View.) If using a third-party app, contact the app's developer or check their documentation for details.

iPhone or iPad

Netflix doesn’t support AirPlay. Use casting (with a cast-compatible device listed above), a video cable or adapter, or the remote that came with your TV or TV-streaming device.

Video cable or adapter

Connect your mobile device directly to your TV or other display using a video cable or adapter. (Your device or video cable/adapter may not be supported by Netflix. See below for details.)

To get started, follow the steps for your device.

You can connect your Android phone or tablet to your TV or display using a video cable or adapter to watch TV shows and movies.

Note: You may see black bars around the video when connecting an iPhone or iPad to a display while playing downloaded TV shows and movies due to the video format.

Before connecting your phone or tablet, check which port your TV or display uses:

  • If your TV or display uses an HDMI port, you'll need to use a video cable adapter that supports video playback.

  • If your TV or display has a USB-C or Thunderbolt port, you can connect it using the cable that came with your phone or tablet. Other USB-C and Thunderbolt cables will work with Netflix, but must support high-resolution video playback (USB version 3.1 or later).

Which video cable or adapter you should use depends on the port on your device and your TV.

For iPhone or iPad devices with a Lightning port, you'll need Apple's Lightning Digital AV Adapter.

If you already have a video cable adapter, here's how to check if it works with Netflix:

  1. Remove all cables connected to the adapter, then connect it to your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Go to Settings > General > About > Apple HDMI Adapter.

  3. Check the Model Number.

    • If you see A1438 or A1621, your adapter is supported. Try using a different cable or HDMI port on your TV. If that doesn't work, follow Apple's steps to fix a different video connection issue.

    • If you don't see A1438 or A1621, your video adapter isn't supported with Netflix and is causing the issue. See the Lightning adapters that are supported.

Before connecting your iPhone or iPad, check which port your TV or display uses:

  • If your TV or display uses an HDMI port, you'll need to use a video cable adapter that supports video playback. We recommend the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, but other adapters may also work.

  • If your TV or display has a USB-C or Thunderbolt port, you can connect to it using the cable that came with your iPhone or iPad. Other USB-C and Thunderbolt cables will work with Netflix, but must support high-resolution video playback (USB version 3.1 or later).

When connecting your iPhone or iPad to a display and playing downloaded shows or movies, you may notice black bars around some downloaded videos. This is due to the video format.

Note: Select iPhone models don't support wired video output. Go to Apple's support site to identify your iPhone model, click the link to see its tech specs, and refer to the Video Playback section to check whether your device supports wired video output.

Note: The autoplay next episode feature isn't supported while using a video cable or adapter.

Note: Casting or mirroring is available on Standard or Premium plans. To check or change your plan, visit your account settings.
