How to use Netflix on your Apple TV

Learn about Netflix features on your Apple TV, including how to set up and sign out of your account. If you don't know if Netflix works on your device, follow the steps in the “Set Up Netflix” section.

To connect your Apple TV to your Netflix account, make sure you are on the home screen and follow the steps below.

Install the Netflix app

  1. From the home screen, select the App Store.

  2. In the App Store, search for Netflix to find the app, then select Get to start installation.

    Note:Netflix is available on Apple TV HD (4th generation) and later.

  3. After installation, the Netflix app will appear on the home screen.

Sign in to Netflix

  1. Open the Netflix app.

  2. Select Sign In to use an existing Netflix account.

    Note:If you're not yet a member, set up your membership at Netflix.com on a web or mobile browser.

  3. After choosing Sign In, enter your Netflix email and password.

Your device is now connected to your Netflix account.

Resolution
Most devices can stream Netflix in high definition on fast internet connections and will play Netflix in their maximum supported resolution.

Parental controls
Netflix allows you to set parental controls on individual profiles.

Subtitles & alternate audio
Learn how to use subtitles, closed captions, and alternate audio (including 5.1 surround sound), which are available on many TV shows and movies. To check if your device supports 5.1 audio, go to any Netflix Original to see if there is a 5.1 audio option. If not, your device does not support this feature. Many devices will let you customize the appearance of subtitles and captions. Some devices will display subtitles and captions in their default appearance or are not configured to display subtitles.

Netflix is available in 4K (Ultra HD) on select Apple TV streaming media players. To stream in 4K (Ultra HD), you'll need:

  • A TV compatible with 4K (Ultra HD) streaming from Netflix, connected to your Apple TV via an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later (usually the HDMI 1 port).

  • A Netflix plan that supports streaming in 4K (Ultra HD).

  • A steady internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher.

  • Streaming quality set to High.

The following Apple TV models currently support Netflix in 4K (Ultra HD):

  • Apple TV 4K (1st generation)

  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)

  • Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)

Netflix is available in Dolby Vision and HDR on the select Apple TV models. To stream in Dolby Vision or HDR, you will need:

  • A Netflix plan that supports streaming in Ultra HD.

  • A streaming device that supports either Dolby Vision or HDR and Netflix.

  • A smart TV that supports either Dolby Vision or HDR10 connected to your device via an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later (usually the HDMI 1 port).

  • A steady internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher.

  • Streaming quality set to High.

The following Apple TV models currently support Netflix in Dolby Vision and HDR10 format:

  • Apple TV 4K (1st generation)

  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)

  • Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)

To sign out of the Netflix account on your device, follow these steps.

  1. From inside the Netflix app, press the Menu button on the remote.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select Sign Out.

Once signed out, you can sign in to a different existing Netflix account.
