How to use Netflix on your Apple TV

Learn about Netflix features on your Apple TV, including how to set up and sign out of your account. If you don't know if Netflix works on your device, follow the steps in the “Set Up Netflix” section.

To connect your Apple TV to your Netflix account, make sure you are on the home screen and follow the steps below.

Install the Netflix app

  1. From the home screen, select the App Store.

  2. In the App Store, search for Netflix to find the app, then select Get to start installation.

  3. Once it's installed, the Netflix app will appear on your home screen.

    Note: Netflix is available on Apple TV HD (4th generation) and later.

Sign in to Netflix

  1. Open the Netflix app.

  2. Select Sign In to use an existing Netflix account.

  3. Enter your Netflix email and password.

    Note: If you're not a member, sign up at Netflix.com.

Your device is now connected to your Netflix account.

Resolution
Most devices can stream Netflix in high definition on fast internet connections and will play Netflix in their maximum supported resolution.

Parental controls
Netflix allows you to set parental controls on individual profiles.

Subtitles & alternate audio

  • Learn how to use subtitles, closed captions, and alternate audio (including 5.1 surround sound), which are available for many TV shows and movies.

    • To check if your device supports 5.1 audio, go to any Netflix Original to see if there is a 5.1 audio option. If not, it means your device doesn't support this feature.

  • Many devices allow you to customize the appearance of subtitles and captions, while others display them in a default style or may not be configured to show subtitles at all.

Netflix is available in 4K (Ultra HD) on select Apple TV streaming media players. To stream in 4K (Ultra HD), you'll need:

  • A TV compatible with 4K (Ultra HD) streaming from Netflix, connected to your Apple TV via an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later (usually the HDMI 1 port).

  • A Netflix plan that supports streaming in 4K (Ultra HD).

  • A steady internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher.

  • Streaming quality set to High.

The following Apple TV models currently support Netflix in 4K (Ultra HD):

  • Apple TV 4K (1st generation)

  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)

  • Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)

Netflix is available in Dolby Vision and HDR on select Apple TV models. To stream in Dolby Vision or HDR, you will need:

  • A Netflix plan that supports streaming in HDR.

  • A streaming device that supports HDR.

  • A smart TV that supports either Dolby Vision, HDR10, or HDR10+ connected to your device via an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later (usually the HDMI 1 port).

  • A steady internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher.

  • Playback settings set to High.

The following Apple TV models currently support Netflix in Dolby Vision and HDR10 format:

  • Apple TV 4K (1st generation)

  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)

  • Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)

To sign out of a Netflix account on your device, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Netflix home screen and press the back button on your remote to get to the menu.

  2. Go left to your profile icon, select Get Help, then Sign out, then select Yes.

If you can't get to the Get Help menu, these steps will also sign you out of your Apple TV.

Delete Netflix

  1. On the Apple TV home screen, highlight the Netflix app.

  2. Press and hold the center of your remote's touch surface or clickpad ring until the Netflix app starts to wiggle.

  3. Press the Play/Pause button to delete the app.

  4. Select Delete to confirm.

Reinstall Netflix

  1. On the Apple TV home screen, open the App Store.

  2. Search for "Netflix" to find the app, then select Install.

  3. Try Netflix again.
