Using Netflix on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

Welcome to Netflix on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch! Use this article to learn about Netflix features and how to set up and sign out of your account. If you’re unsure if your device supports Netflix, follow the steps on the “Set up Netflix” tab to attempt to locate the Netflix app.

Netflix Features

Netflix is available on many iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models. Netflix streaming features for supported devices running iOS 8.0 or later include:

Supported Regions:
Netflix is available on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models running the newest version in all regions where the Netflix service is available.

Navigation:
The Netflix app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch lets you browse through rows of our top selections for you for each genre. There is also a row that displays what you've been watching recently, so you can pick up where you left off anytime. A search option is available if you know the name of the movie or TV show you want to watch.

Resolution:
iPhone and iPod touch support streaming up to 720p in iOS 7 and later, and 480p in iOS 6 and earlier. iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 7 Plus support streaming up to 1080p. iPad supports streaming up to 720p in iOS 7 or later, and 480p in iOS 6 and earlier. iPads with Retina displays support streaming up to1080p.

Subtitles & Alternate Audio:
While a movie or TV show is playing, tap the screen to bring up your play options. On the right you'll find an option to enable subtitles, if available.

Downloads:
Download select titles to watch when you can't be online. See our article about downloads to learn more.

Airplay:
iPhone, iPad and iPod touch allow streaming to Airplay-enabled devices over Wi-Fi via Airplay Mirroring. Please note that an Internet connection is required on the Airplay-enabled device. For detailed instructions on enabling Airplay Mirroring on your iOS device, visit Apple's support site.

Video out:
iPhone, iPad and iPod touch support video out via a number of compatible Apple-specific connection kits. More information is available through Apple's support site.

The current version of the Netflix app requires iOS version 8.0 or later. Instructions for determining which iOS version you're using on your Apple device can be found on Apple's support site.

Set up Netflix

To connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to your Netflix account, make sure you are on the Home screen and follow the steps below.

Note: The current version of the Netflix app requires iOS version 8.0 or later. Customers in the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand who are running iOS 5.0 or above are able to download an earlier, compatible version of the Netflix app.

  1. Tap App Store.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Type Netflix in the Search bar.
  4. Tap Search.
  5. Tap the Netflix, Inc. search result.
  6. Tap Get or the Cloud icon.
  7. Tap Netflix icon on the Home screen.
  8. Enter your Netflix email and password.
  9. Tap Sign In.

Your device is now connected to your Netflix account. Enjoy!

Sign out of Netflix

There are two ways to sign out of Netflix on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch:

Sign out from within the Netflix app

  1. Tap the Menu icon in the upper left corner of the app.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the list that appears and select Sign Out.
    1. Note: If you do not see Sign Out in the Menu, select Home, then scroll to the bottom of the app and select Sign Out.

Force-quit, then reset the Netflix app

  1. Press the Home button twice.
  2. Swipe left or right until you see the Netflix app.
  3. Swipe upwards on the Netflix app preview to close it.
    • In iOS 6, hold your finger on the app until a red badge with a line through it appears, then tap the badge to close the app.
  4. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.
  5. Select the Settings app.
  6. Swipe down until you locate the Netflix app.
  7. Select Netflix.
  8. Slide the Reset toggle to the On position.
  9. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.
  10. Select Netflix.
  11. Enter your Netflix email address and password.

*Signing out of your Netflix account will remove any titles you have downloaded through the app.
