Using Netflix on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Learn about Netflix features on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, including how to set up and sign out of your account. If you don't know if your device supports Netflix, follow the steps in the “Set up Netflix” section.

Netflix streaming features for supported devices include:

Search
Find TV shows and movies by searching directly on the Netflix app when using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Subtitles & Alternate Audio
While a TV show or movie is playing, tap the screen to bring up your play options. On the right you'll find an option to enable subtitles, if available.

Downloads
Download select titles to watch offline on iOS 9.0 or later.

Video out
iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models support video out via a number of compatible Apple-specific connection kits. More information is available through Apple's support site.

Picture in Picture (iPad only)
Certain iPad models allow you to use Picture in Picture to watch Netflix while using other apps. For detailed instructions on using Picture in Picture, visit Apple's support site.

High Dynamic Range

Netflix is available in High Dynamic Range on select devices. Review the compatible models section to see if your device is supported. See our article about HDR10 and Dolby Vision to learn more.

 Devices must run the latest version of iOS for Dolby Vision playback to work properly.

The Netflix app is available on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models running iOS 12 or later, and is compatible with devices running iOS 5.0 or later that have already downloaded the Netflix app. Instructions for determining which iOS version you have can be found on Apple's support site.

Note:
Devices running iOS 5.0 or later may be able to download an earlier version of the Netflix app if the app was downloaded in the past. See Apple's support site for instructions.

To connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Netflix account, make sure you are on the Home screen and follow the steps below.

  1. Open the App Store.

  2. Select Search.

  3. Type Netflix in the Search bar.

  4. Select Search.

  5. Select the Netflix, Inc. search result.

  6. Select Get or tap the Cloud icon.

  7. Tap the Netflix icon on the Home screen.

  8. Enter your Netflix email address and password.

    Note:
    If you're not already a Netflix member, please join and come back to start watching TV shows and movies.
  9. Select Sign In.

Your device is now connected to your Netflix account.

There are two ways to sign out of Netflix on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

Sign out from within the Netflix app

  1. Tap the Menu icon in the upper left corner of the app.

  2. Scroll down and select Sign Out.

    • If you do not see Sign Out in the Menu, select Home, then scroll to the bottom of the app and select Sign Out.

Force-quit, then reset the Netflix app

  1. Press the Home button twice.

  2. Swipe left or right until you see the Netflix app.

  3. Swipe upwards on the Netflix app preview to close it.

    • In iOS 6, hold your finger on the app until a red badge with a line through it appears, then tap the badge to close the app.

  4. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.

  5. Select Settings.

  6. Swipe down until you locate the Netflix app.

  7. Select Netflix.

  8. Slide the Reset toggle to the On position.

    Note:
    Resetting the Netflix app will remove any titles you have downloaded through the app.
  9. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.

  10. Select Netflix.

  11. Enter your Netflix email address and password.
