How to use Netflix on your iPhone or iPad

The most up-to-date version of the Netflix app is available for iPhones and iPads using iOS/iPadOS version 17 or later. Learn how to find which version your device is using.

Note: If you've downloaded the Netflix app before, you'll be able to redownload it on devices using iOS 5 or later. Learn how to redownload apps from the App Store.

To get Netflix on your iPhone or iPad, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the App Store.

  2. Select Search.

  3. Type Netflix in the search bar, then tap the Search button.

  4. Select Netflix from the search results.

  5. Select Get or tap the Cloud icon.

  6. Tap the Netflix icon on the homescreen.

  7. Enter your Netflix email address and password, then select Sign In.

Your device is now connected to your Netflix account.

The following streaming features are available for supported devices:

  • Search
    Find TV shows and movies by searching directly on the Netflix app when using your iPhone or iPad.

  • Subtitles & alternate audio
    While a TV show or movie is playing, tap the screen to bring up your play options. On the right you'll find an option to enable subtitles (if available).

Note: To download titles with an ad-supported experience, you'll need your device to be on iOS version 16 or later.

  • Video out
    iPhones and iPads support video out through a number of compatible Apple-specific connection kits. More information is available on the Apple support site.

  • Picture-in-Picture (requires iOS version 14 or later)
    Certain iPad and iPhone models allow you to watch Netflix while using other apps. Visit the Apple support site for instructions on using this feature.

Note: Picture-in-Picture isn't available on ad-supported plans.

  • Spatial Audio (requires iOS version 14.6 or later)
    The Netflix Premium plan supports spatial audio on compatible iPad and iPhone models using AirPods Pro and AirPods Max headphones. For detailed instructions on using spatial audio, visit the Apple support site.

Note: Spatial audio is supported when streaming content. Downloaded TV shows and movies will use stereo or binaural audio.

  • High Dynamic Range (HDR)
    Certain iPhone and iPad models can play Netflix in Dolby Vision or HDR. To check if your mobile device supports HDR, go to the section below.

Note:Some mobile devices may not always stream in HDR even if an HDR label appears, like if the device is in low power mode or using a cellular connection.

There are 2 ways to sign out of Netflix on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. Open the Netflix app.

  2. In the lower right, tap My Netflix.

  3. In the upper right, tap Menu.

  4. Tap Sign Out, then tap Sign Out again to confirm.

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to show currently open apps.

    • For devices with a Home button, press twice quickly.

  2. Swipe left or right until you see the Netflix app.

  3. Swipe up on the Netflix app preview to close it.

    • In iOS 6, hold your finger on the app until a red badge with a line through it appears, then tap the badge to close the app.

  4. Press the Home button to return to the homescreen.

  5. Select Settings.

  6. Swipe down until you find the Netflix app.

  7. Select Netflix.

  8. Slide the Reset switch to the On position.

    Note: Resetting the Netflix app will remove any downloaded Netflix titles.

  9. Press the Home button to return to the homescreen.

  10. Select Netflix.

  11. Enter your Netflix email address and password.
