How to keep your account secure

Here are our top recommendations to help keep your account and personal information safe.

Use a strong password for Netflix that you don't use anywhere else

We recommend that you use a strong password that is unique to Netflix to help keep your account secure.

Your password should be:

  • Different than what you use for any other websites or apps

  • At least 8 characters long

  • A mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols

  • Not easily guessed - such as “password,” “12345678,” or use any personal information (name, birthday, address)

A password manager can make it easier to keep track of unique passwords.

You should avoid using the same sign in information for Netflix that you use with other websites, apps, or services. If that sign in information gets leaked or compromised outside of Netflix, an attacker can use it to access and change your Netflix account and take over any other accounts that reuse it.

If you have trouble remembering passwords, a password manager can generate long, unique passwords and keep track of them for you. Most browsers and phones now include a password manager at no cost.

You can change your password by sending yourself a password reset email or text message, or change it on the Change Password page.

Keep your personal information safe

Netflix will never ask you to share sensitive personal or financial information in a text or email. This includes:

  • Credit or debit card numbers

  • Bank account details

  • Netflix passwords

We'll also never ask for payment through a third-party vendor or website.

Other things you should do

You can sign out of all devices, or sign out of specific unused or unrecognized devices with recent streaming activity from the Manage Access & Devices page.

If you are using public or shared devices, you should log out at the completion of each session.

If you're getting rid of a device you previously used to watch Netflix, sign out of Netflix and any accounts or services that you used on the device before turning it over.

Phishing is an attempt to get your personal information by pretending to be a website, person or company you trust.

Phishers may create fake websites that look like Netflix, or send emails or text messages that imitate us and ask you for personal information. These messages are increasingly convincing, so when in doubt, don’t click the link. Open the Netflix app or type Netflix.com into your browser instead.

Have you received a phishing message or visited a phishing website? See Phishing or suspicious emails or texts claiming to be from Netflix.

At Netflix, we take fraud seriously. Contact us if you notice suspicious or unrecognized charges or unauthorized account activity.

Accounts offered for sale or shared on third-party sites are often stolen, and using one could put someone else’s or your personal information at risk. You should also avoid sharing your sign in information or account with strangers who could access your viewing history or attempt to take over your account.

Make sure that the email and phone number on your account are current and accessible, so you can recover your account if you lose access., If you have not yet added a phone number, which is important to your account security, see How to add, change or delete a phone number.

Many attacks on personal devices succeed because software is out of date. Wherever you watch Netflix, whether on a phone, computer, tablet, or TV, we recommend that you:

  • Turn on automatic updates for the operating system, your browser, your apps (including Netflix), and any anti-malware or anti-virus software

  • Install apps from official app stores or the manufacturer’s designated portal or website

  • Take advantage of any built-in security protections on the device

  • Ensure that your device is free from malware and other malicious software

Signs that a computer may be infected include unusually slow performance, unexpected pop-up windows or advertisements while streaming, and unexpected reboots, crashes, or freezing. If you think a device you are using to access Netflix is infected, use the security software recommended by your device manufacturer or a trusted anti-malware or anti-virus software, or consult a trusted IT professional.

If you believe you've found a security vulnerability on the Netflix service or in an Netflix app, please tell us as quickly as possible by submitting it through our bug bounty program. Please keep the issue private and avoid disclosing the vulnerability to others (or publicly) until we notify you it is fixed. We review all reports and will do our best to address any issues promptly.

If you have questions about the privacy of your information, please see our Privacy Statement.
