How to use Netflix on your Roku

Use this article to learn about Netflix features and how to set up and sign out of your account. If you’re unsure if your device supports Netflix, follow the steps in the “Set Up Netflix” section to try to find the Netflix app.

To watch Netflix TV shows and movies on your Roku, first create a Roku account. Once the account is created, follow the steps for your Roku below.

From the main Home screen, navigate to Home and select Netflix.

  1. If Netflix is missing:

    • Navigate to Channel Store, then Movies & TV.

    • Select Netflix, then Add Channel, then go to channel.

  2. Select Yes on the Are you a member of Netflix? screen.

Your Roku is now connected to your Netflix account.

  1. Begin from your TV home screen.

  2. Press the Netflix button on your remote.

  3. Once in the Netflix app, select Sign In and follow the instructions on the screen.

Netflix is available on select Roku models. Netflix streaming features on supported devices include:

Navigation
On most devices, you can browse through rows of TV shows and movies, including a row dedicated to your My List selections. Each row represents a category (such as comedies, dramas, or TV shows) that we show you based on what you’ve watched.

Resolution
Most devices can stream Netflix in high definition on fast internet connections and will play Netflix in the highest supported resolution.

Parental controls
You can set parental controls on individual profiles.

Subtitles & alternate audio
Learn how to turn on subtitles, closed captions, and alternate audio (including 5.1 surround sound), which are available on many TV shows and movies. Many devices let you choose how subtitles and captions look. Some devices show subtitles and captions in their default appearance, or aren't set up to show subtitles.

On some devices, you can also stream select titles with Dolby Atmos audio.

Netflix is available in Ultra HD on select Roku streaming media players. To stream in Ultra HD, you will need:

  • A 2014 or newer Ultra HD TV that is capable of streaming Ultra HD content at 60 Hz, connected to your Roku via an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later (usually the HDMI 1 port).

  • A Netflix plan that supports streaming in Ultra HD.

  • A steady internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher.

  • Streaming quality set to Auto or High.

You can watch Netflix in Ultra HD on the following Roku models:

  • Roku Express 4K+ (3941X)

  • Roku Premiere (3920X, 4620X)

If you experience any issues playing content in Ultra HD, follow the steps below to make sure your Roku is configured for Ultra HD output.

  1. From the Roku home menu, select Settings.

  2. Select Display.

  3. Select 4k UHD TV.

  4. Try Netflix again.

Netflix is available in HDR on select Roku streaming media players. To stream in HDR, you will need:

  • A Netflix plan that supports streaming in Ultra HD.

  • A streaming device that supports either Dolby Vision or HDR and Netflix.

  • A smart TV that supports either Dolby Vision or HDR10 connected to your device via an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later (usually the HDMI 1 port).

  • A steady internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher.

  • Streaming quality set to High.

You can watch Netflix in HDR on the following Roku models:

  • Roku Express 4K (3940X)

  • Roku Express 4K+ (3941X)

  • Roku Premiere (3920X)

  • Roku Premiere+ (3921X, 4630X)

To sign out of the Netflix account on your device, follow these steps.

  1. Press the Home button to navigate to the Roku Home Menu.

  2. Highlight the Netflix app and press the star key on your remote.

  3. Select Remove channel.

  4. Once you confirm by selecting Remove channel again, the device will be deactivated.

    • Deactivating the Roku will remove the Netflix channel from the main menu. To restore it, select Streaming Channels > Movies & TV > Netflix.

  1. Go to the Netflix home screen, then go left to open the menu.

  2. At the bottom, select Get Help > Sign out > Yes.

    Note:If you don't see Get Help, go up and select Settings.

If you can't find Get Help, Settings, or Sign out:

  1. Using your remote, press these buttons in this order: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up.

  2. On the menu that appears, select Sign out, Start Over, Reset, or Deactivate.
