Downloading TV shows and movies on Netflix

You can download select TV shows and movies on the Netflix app to watch offline later. This feature is available on the Netflix app for Apple iOS or Android mobile devices, and computers and tablets running Windows 10. Downloads are not currently supported on other devices, or on computer browsers. If you see an error message when attempting to download or watch a title, search our Help Center for that message.

What do I need to download TV shows and movies on Netflix?

  • An internet connection, and

  • An active Netflix streaming account, and

  • An iPhone, iPad, or iPod running iOS 9.0 or later, or

  • A phone or tablet running Android 4.4.2 or later, or

  • An Amazon Fire tablet running Fire OS 4.0 or later, or

  • A tablet or computer running Windows 10 Version 1607 (Anniversary Update) or later, and

  • The latest version of the Netflix Apple iOS, Netflix Android, Amazon Fire, or Netflix Windows 10 app

Note:
Some Chromebook and Chromebox models may be able to download the current Netflix app for Android from the Google Play Store and use the downloads feature.

How do I download a title?

If you have a particular title in mind, you can search for that title and look for the download icon . Once you have found a title, follow the steps below.

  1. Select the title you would like to download.

  2. On the description page, tap the Download icon .

    • For TV shows, the icon will appear next to each available episode.

  3. Once the title has completed downloading, you can access it from the My Downloads section of the app.

I'm not seeing the download option.

Not all titles are available for download. If you do not have these options on your device, you may be attempting to download to a device that does not meet the criteria for downloads listed above.

Note:
Android phones and tablets also allow Smart Downloads, a feature that automatically downloads the next episode in a TV series when you finish watching an episode.

How do I watch a downloaded title?

Select the device you downloaded the title on.

Note:
Though you do not need to be connected to the internet to watch your downloaded titles, you will need to be signed in to your Netflix account to access them. To ensure you always have access to your downloads, we recommend remaining signed in to your Netflix mobile app.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod

  1. Select the Downloads icon from within the Netflix app.

  2. Tap the Play icon on the title you would like to watch.

    • For TV shows, you must first select the show, then tap the Play icon on the episode you would like to watch.

Android phone or tablet

  1. Select the Downloads icon from within the Netflix app.

  2. Tap the Play icon on the title you would like to watch.

    • For TV shows, you must first select the show, then tap the Play icon on the episode you would like to watch.

Amazon Fire tablet

  1. Select the Downloads icon from within the Netflix app.

  2. Tap the Play icon on the title you would like to watch.

    • For TV shows, you must first select the show, then tap the Play icon on the episode you would like to watch.

Windows 10 tablet or computer

  1. Open the Netflix app and tap the Menu icon Menu.

  2. Select My Downloads.

  3. Tap the Play icon on the title you would like to watch.

    • For TV shows, you must first select the show, then tap the Play icon on the episode you would like to watch.

How do I delete a downloaded title?

When you are finished watching a downloaded title, you can delete it from your device if you no longer wish to store it.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod

Delete a single downloaded title from your iOS device:

  1. Tap Downloads.

  2. Tap Edit in the upper right corner of your screen.

  3. Tap the red X icon to remove the title from your device.

Delete all downloaded titles from your iOS device:

  1. Tap the Menu icon .

  2. Scroll down and select App Settings.

  3. Select Delete All Downloads.

  4. On the confirmation screen, select Delete.

  5. All downloaded titles will be deleted.

Android phone or tablet

Delete a single downloaded title from your Android device:

  1. Tap Downloads.

  2. Tap the edit icon Edit in the upper right corner of your screen.

  3. Select the titles you wish to delete by checking the box next to the titles.

  4. Tap the delete icon Delete to remove the title from your device.

Delete all downloaded titles from your Android device:

How do I change download video quality?

You can select the download video quality that best fits your needs. Standard quality is a slightly lower video quality that requires less storage space and takes less time to download. Higher quality, up to 1080p depending on title downloaded, requires more storage space and takes more time to download.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod

  1. From the Netflix app, tap the Menu icon Menu.

  2. Scroll down and select App Settings.

  3. Under the Downloads heading, select Video Quality.

  4. Select either Standard or Higher video quality.

Android phone or tablet

  1. From the Netflix app, tap the Menu icon .

  2. Scroll down and select App Settings.

  3. Under the Downloads heading, select Video Quality.

  4. Select either Standard or Higher video quality.

Note:
Android devices must be able to stream Netflix in HD to select video quality. Learn more about Android HD-capable models.

Amazon Fire tablet

  1. From the Netflix app, tap the Menu icon .

  2. Scroll down and select App Settings.

  3. Under the Downloads heading, select Video Quality.

  4. Select either Standard or Higher video quality.

How can I remove downloads from a device I don't have access to?

If you aren't able to delete downloaded titles directly from a device, you can manage your active download devices from your Account page on Netflix.com, or through the Netflix app using the steps below. When you remove a device, all downloads on that device will be removed.

iPhone, iPad, or iPod

  1. From Netflix.com, click or tap the Menu icon .

  2. Select Account.

  3. Scroll down and select Manage Download Devices.

  4. Select Remove Device on any device you wish to remove.

Android phone or tablet

  1. From Netflix.com, click or tap the Menu icon .

  2. Select Account.

  3. Scroll down and select Manage Download Devices.

  4. Select Remove Device on any device you wish to remove.

Amazon Fire tablet

From Netflix.com, click or tap the Menu icon .

  1. Select Account.

  2. Scroll down and select Manage Download Devices.

  3. Select Remove Device on any device you wish to remove.

Windows 10 tablet or computer

  3. Select Account Details.

  4. Scroll down and select Manage Download Devices.

  5. Select Remove Device on any device you wish to remove.

How can I manage my Android storage location?

Android devices with an installed SD card allow you to store your downloads there.

  1. From the Netflix app, tap the Menu icon .

  2. Scroll down and select App Settings.

  3. Under the Downloads heading, select Download Location.

  4. Select where you would like to store your downloads.
    This will change the storage location of future downloads. Titles you have already downloaded will remain where they are.

Do downloads impact my data usage?

Downloading and streaming consume similar amounts of data. If you are concerned about mobile data usage, we suggest downloading while connected to Wi-Fi. See our Help Center for more information on data usage.

Is there a limit to how many titles I can download?

You can currently store a maximum of 100 titles on a single device at any given time. Attempts to store more than 100 titles will result in an error.

Is there a limit to how many devices I can have downloads on?

Depending on your streaming plan, you can have one, two, or four devices with downloaded titles on them at any given time. If you have downloads on the maximum number of devices for your streaming plan, you will need to delete all downloads from at least one device before being able to download on a new device.

Will I be notified when a download is about to expire?

After you download a title to your device, you have a limited amount of time to watch it before it expires. Titles that are expiring from your device in less than 7 days will display the amount of time you have left . When a title you have downloaded is no longer available on Netflix, the download will expire and you will not be able to play it.
